Frequently Asked Questions ・ よくある質問

Q: What is a tuition lesson like?A: Mainly, there are two identifiable styles in a typical tuition session:
1. "Revise & Study" style: Student provides own study materials and teacher tutors the student using the student's syllabus. The teachers are fully trained and are capable to teach from any course book.
2. Conversational style: teacher engages in conversation with student over a broad range of topics and student takes notes under the supervision of the teacher. Multimedia (music, animation, drawings) may be drawn upon. Students may choose to bring their own Japanese storybooks, available at a good price from Kishun, near Raffles Place MRT (non-afflilate, 16 Raffles Quey, #B1-13 Hong Leong Building).

Q: What are the benefits of a local teacher? Wouldn't a native Japanese be better?A: This is a common, stereotypical misconception. Teaching, and teaching effectively, boils down to each individual teacher's personality, skill sets, affinity and capabilities, instead of the country of birth.

An experienced Singaporean teacher specializing in teaching the Japanese language is able to:
1. Explain nuances and give tips on learning the student identifies and understands easily
2. Empathise with and be well aware of exactly where the student is facing / may face learning difficulties.Of particular reiterative value is the latter point, the lack of which happens to be most natives' blindspot, due to the high likelihood of perceiving phrases or words as "just the way they are", without prior experience as a foreigner learning the Japanese language in a non-Japanese environment, or "in the shoes of the student", so to speak.

A clear, relevant analogy - Singapore has an extremely high standard of English nary inferior to any native English country (if a "factor" as dismissable as nativeness could even be considered to be used for comparison of competency in a language as global as English at all), and to this, we have our capable, local Singaporean teachers to thank for.
